A $350 3D woodcarving CNC with a little help from my friends
Using an older Mitutoyo air cushions CMM for transforming it into a very stable CNC for my friend Alain who operates a UA-cam channel about woodworking.
Since his old light duty CNC was letting him down Alain needed something more reliable to be able to perform many types of sculptures designed from his CAD program.
In oder to realize the project, I found an old Mitutoyo CMM and offered to transform it into a CNC, in this video you'll be able to follow how from ideas, schematics, machining, welding and finally assembling we ended making a decent CNC able to perform for days projects without worries...
The whole project was filmed on a period of about 18 months at all steps of the fabrication.

    The magnetron anode touches metal within the mounting housing. Is that normal?

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687 4 дні тому

      If the magnetron housing is isolated from the unit and there is one of the side that makes contact with the case, there is most likely a problem with this magnetron. Look out on Ali express or Ebay using the number on the unit, you should find something in the 30 to 50 USD range. look out for burnt windings on the High Voltage coil or anything wrong ont the HV board... Let me know how it turns out...

    Hello Poerre. Can you tell me please. Do you short the capacitors on these Panasonic inverter microwaves,please? And if so .Can you tell me please. How you do it more safe? Thank you and nice video.

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687 7 днів тому

      It's always safer to discharge those capscitors, the best way to procede is to get an appropriate resistor and a wire with aligator clips, you clip one end with the resistor to ground or one lead of the capacitor and with the other end you touch the other end. Avoid touching with both hands or making a part with 2 opposite body parts.....

      Thank you Pierre for the reply. Are the capacitors easy visible? . I was told it was near the green part of the Inverter board. I only saw a picture so far. I haven't seen the real one yet. Many thanks for the reply.@@pierresgarage2687

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687 6 днів тому

      As I remember they are quite easy to reach, if an aligator clip doesn't do it you can use meeter probes with a needle point to get the same result, after discharge use the meter to check for residual voltage, though, be careful with the kilovolts rated parts not to overload you meter's capacity. If you're not rxperienced with electric circuits and electronics, be really careful not to cause yourself injuries...

    Something really odd about using calipers accurate to three decimal places but with those ludicrous imperial units. I s'pose it might come in handy for those times when you need something to be exactly 234762 millionths of an inch.

    Hi Pierre, Great video 📹. I'm still trying to understand the resistor graph. In the range of 90 to 130 VDC Does the graph go from a minimum of 1/100 to 1? Is this unit referred to with HP power? For the KBMD-240D with 1/2 engine. So does this mean that at 1/2 HP at 115VAC the resistor must be 0.025 ohms? Thanks

    I have the exact same jack and it won't hold a lift and also leaks oil. I only use it for lifting lighter weight things like lighter parts of a vehicle like a wheel when replacing control arms. Your video is incredibly detailed and concise. Better than a training video. I'm going to try and repair mine as I've had it for so long that I can't bear to part with it. Quick question. Do you remember how much jack oil it took to refill after re-assembly?

    • @schifoso
      @schifoso 22 дні тому

      I ended up cleaning mine up and it didn't take much oil at all. When re-assembling, if you're having problem lining up the bottle jack part into the main assembly, you can lift up on the saddle and that will change the length of the whole assembly and make lining up a lot easier.

    I have a starrett 98-8, something was dropped on the edge of the vial opening and made a tiny nick and now the 2 cylinders smoothly twist each other only up until hitting the nick and then stiff to twist. Also the vial broke. Can it be fixed. Bore out the bent one maybe

      About the tubes, depending on how much of a dent there is, you can possibly reshape or lightly rebore it and/or lap the cylinders. If the dammage is too extensive and if you want looking like new part just be aware that you can order brand new parts from Starrett or some distributor, that is also true for he vial either alone or installed in the tubes. Let me kno how you managed and thanks for viewing

    Well, a fine mesh on the basket should be the cure to prevent any debris entering the pump. But that will requiere cleaning more often. I do think a clogged discharge line may make the impeller cavitate and eventually deform the shaft.

    Hi Pierre, my Panasonic Inverter Microwave, model number NNSD997S, turns on automatically with the light, fan, and turning glass tray activating when the door is closed, even when no button is pressed. This occurs despite replacing all three interlock switches with OEM parts and confirming the door seal is free from debris. Additionally, the control panel shows no obvious damage or burnt marks. Could you share your thoughts on what might be causing this issue?

      Oh...! That's a good one...! First thing that came to me is that there is a possibility of a stuck button or something of the kind, looks like the logic control board is always on. Not much else i can suggest without more probing, let me know if you can determine if the command signal is active on the output of the main board with the buttons.

    Which one to get depends how much precision you actually need. If a cheap caliper is accurate to within 1/100th of a millimetre, that's enough for most people.

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687 4 місяці тому

      As a general rule, you buy the metrology equipments you need to achieve the required tolerances on the parts you produce. broader tolerances are quite easy to control with cheaper but reliable caliper, as tight tolerance will require a well calibrated brand name micrometer or even more for like space ship parts... 👍👍🙂🙂

      @pierresgarage2687 4 місяці тому

      I don't know if you're familiar with machining modes, but, to make it as short as possible, there are two modes to consider in this operation. conventionlal milling or climb milling, in the video I'm using conventional milling, meaning that the rotation of the cutter won't pull the part into itself. This is mainly to avoid that the backlash isn't gonna be a issue and cause the tool to get a huge bite and break. To use climb milling safely you need a very rigid machine with a lead screews with virtualy no backlash. The bigger the diameter of the tool the more risk to use climb milling gets. Let me knowif it's clear for you....

    Interesting how deep the 6010 got with only 100a and mig needed nearly 3x as much current to do better. I wonder how deep a large 6010 at 250-300a would do.

      I've never tried with rods bigger than 5/32", it would require at least 1/4" rods, my favorite rod is the 7018, just a little inconvenient on the restarts, though, it produces nice clean beads with easy slag removal...

      @@pierresgarage2687 I share your love of 7018 (except restarts). I just love the fast freeze and deep penetration of 6010, plus it seems a bit more challenging to use, which is both frustrating and rewarding.

    newbie here. the lapping steel plates - where to buy? mygreathanks and blessings

      The aluminium plates I used in the video were just made flat from milling them with a big facemill. If you want a really absolute flat surface thos are available from sullpier that make high precision devices, just be aware that those aren't cheap. Everything depends on what you want to achieve in the end. Also make sure you get a plate that is softer than the material you want to lap, get aluminium, copper, cast iron, plain steel. Enjoy machining, it's a real fun occupation...

    Mitituyo are much smoother and easier to control the thumb wheel. Cheaper ones can jump around a little when trying to hit a certain mark

      The better quality tools are always worth the extra money, if you can afford to spend it. Be also aware that some lower priced items are also a good option for lower budget operations. A good way to get good quality tools is to look for some well maintained used tools on your local adds or any source you trust...

    Great video, I'm new to tig welding so all of this is good information. I'm from Ontario so I'll look up the same fluid you used.

      You'll enjoy the precision of TIG welding, not easy to master, though... I got my antifreeze from a local supplier named Maxigaz in Saint Constant, if you can't get the exact same thing just make sure you use some stuff made for the purpose, avoid at all cost the brands made for automotive as they will cake in the whole system and ruin your cooler... Thanks for your comment.... 🙂🙂

      Appreciate all the tips! Thanks very much :) Yes it's going to be a long road ahead, and many refills of 100% argon, until I get it right, lol. Thanks again. @@pierresgarage2687

    Do you have the part number or link to those relays? How did you come up with the P/N, is it on the relay itself?

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687 5 місяців тому

      You can look on the relay itself for the number, if it's similar to what I repaired in the video it should be " JQC-25F-18 " or very close to it, it's available on eBay from many suppliers, price should be no more than 2 to 3$ each plus shipping not more than 4 to 5$. Let me kno how it goes for you finding it...
